Raccoon Creek buffer project gets state grant

1 min read

The Washington County Council on Economic Development received a $293,250 Commonwealth Financing Authority grant for its Starpointe wetland and stream mitigation plan in Hanover Township, state Rep. Jesse White, D- Cecil, announced.

The money will go toward installing 2.89 acres of riparian buffers, formed by vegetation, along Raccoon Creek’s tributaries and for construction of a rain garden along its banks. Raccoon Creek suffers from poorly treated sewage, acid-mine drainage pollution and erosion.

The improvements will help restore 1.5 miles of tributary and about 32 miles of Raccoon Creek downstream, White said.

Total cost of the project is $345,000.
