Mystery Photo No. 74

These six young women look like winners, judging by the size of the trophy and their smiles.

The problem is that we don’t know who they are or for what they won their award. This week’s Mystery Photo turned up in a box of negatives from the Observer-Reporter’s Canonsburg office. It was taken sometime from 1969 to 1971.

We’re assuming that they are high school girls, and their achievement might have been athletic, because the figures on the large trophy and on a smaller one just to its left look like runners breaking a tape.

The photo was made during the “do your own thing” era, but the hairstyles are remarkably uniform: long, straight and with a flip at the end. Look at photos of high school girls today and you’ll see nothing but long hair, ironed straight with no flip.

It’s more than likely this photo appeared in an edition of the newspaper, but searching for it isn’t possible without a more precise date or any names. If you think you know who these winners are, or where and when the picture was taken, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at pburroughs@observer-reporter.com, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400. With a little luck and some help from our readers, we’ll be able to solve this puzzle and tell their story next Monday.
