Veterans Day programs announced

Communities throughout Greene County will honor the men and women who served in the country’s armed services with parades and special ceremonies for Veterans Day.

The Greene County Veterans Day Parade in Waynesburg will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 8 and be followed by a ceremony and program in front of Greene County Courthouse.

The event is sponsored by Greene County Veterans Council. Veteran Dick Davis will serve as parade marshal.

The parade will start at First Baptist Church, at the corner of High and West streets, and continue east on High Street to Morgan Street. Participants will line up for the parade at 9:30 a.m. at the church.

Ann K. Drach, a retired U.S. Army colonel, will be the speaker for the program. Drach of Sycamore was commissioned in 1974 and served worldwide for 28 years as a member of the Army’s transportation Corps.

A luncheon also will be served from noon to 2 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793 on Lincoln Street, Waynesburg, for veterans and the public.

Rogersville United Methodist Church will hold a special service for Veterans Day at 11 a.m. Nov. 9 at the church at 102 Church St., Rogersville. The special service will take the place of the morning worship service and it will be led by Pastor Cynthia Deter.

Capt. Wesley Conmer of the Air Force Reserve’s 911th Airlift Wing will be the speaker. All veterans will be recognized. State Rep. Pam Snyder and state Sen. Tim Solobay will make the presentations to the veterans. Everyone is welcome to attend the service. Following the service, lunch will be served.

The Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post No. 954, Jefferson will hold its annual Veterans Day parade at 10:40 a.m. Nov. 11 in Jefferson.

Participants will assemble at Jefferson Fire Hall and march to Jefferson-Morgan High School, stopping in front of the American Legion post for a salute to the veterans’ departed comrades.

A program will be held in the high school auditorium at 11:30 a.m. Thomas Shumaker, past western vice commander for the Department of Pennsylvania American Legion, will be the speaker.

Following the program, the post will conduct a Post Everlasting Ceremony, memorializing members of the post who have died away since the last Veterans Day.

Carmichaels American Legion Post No. 400 will hold a service in Carmichaels town square at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 that will include a tribute to all veterans with a 21-gun salute. Those in attendance will then walk to the post for a program and welcome.
