Doggone Pool Party set for Wana B Park this weekend

2 min read

CARMICHAELS – For the first time, Carmichaels Pool at Wana B Park goes to the dogs for the annual Doggone Pool Party from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

All dogs and their owners are invited to attend the event. The Humane Society of Greene County holds a party that gives dogs a chance to bask in the sun and, if they want, take a dip in the pool.

Dog owners are asked only to make a donation to the humane society for admission. Owners are permitted to swim with their dogs if they choose.

The humane society has held the event since 2006 to raise money for its shelter. The party previously was held at Mon View Park Pool, which this year was under renovation.

“We had a pretty good turnout last year with about 40 dogs,” said Amy Gyurke, party coordinator. Many of the dogs attend each year. “So we’re trying to reach out a little for the people who don’t know about it and get them to attend,” she said.

It’s a fun event, Gyurke said. Children particularly enjoy it when dogs, some dressed in swimsuits, start diving into the water.

Dog owners also usually participate in a little “friendly competition” in regard to whose canine is best diver, best dressed or cutest, she said.

Money raised helps buy items for the shelter including food, medicine and medical supplies and helps cover the costs to spay and neuter animals.

Canines must be leashed and have proof of vaccinations. Children who attend under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

An awards ceremony also will be part of the party and will include the awarding of prizes for “Best Swimsuit” and “Best in Pool.” An “AARP” award, American Association of Retired Pups, also will be presented.

The event provides dogs the opportunity to use the pool before it officially closes for the season.

Gyurke thanked the county commissioners and county department of recreation for the use of the pool.

“It’s a nice event that brings people together and helps raise money for the shelter,” Gyurke said. Representatives from the humane society will be on hand to supervise the festivities.

For further information, call the humane society at 724-627-9988 or visit www.greenepet.org. The shelter is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
