WAYNESBURG – Downtown Waynesburg will be filled today with the sounds of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll; poodle skirts and bobby socks will be back in style; and classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will line the curb on High Street.

It’s all part of the 13th annual ’50s Fest and Car Cruise, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A family event, spectators can enjoy wandering up and down the street, which will be closed to traffic for the day, to get an up-close look at vintage cars and trucks, muscle cars and tricked-out motorcycles, all parked right on the streets downtown.

The event typically draws about 300 classic vehicles to downtown and their owners out for a day of cruising in, showing off and hanging out.

There is no admission fee and no registration fee for vehicles. The entire event is free, thanks to generous sponsorship from local merchants and organizations.

Greene County “Greaser” DJ Doug Wilson of WANB Radio will be broadcasting a special edition of Greene County oldies music from the courthouse steps all day. The event also will include dance contests, hula hooping and bubble gum blowing.

Door prizes will be offered also, along with raffles and other giveaways.

Most downtown merchants and specialty shops also will be open for the day and offering ’50s Fest specials.

A collectible dash magnet will be given free to each exhibitor.

It features Bud Bradmon of Rices Landing in his 1965 Rambler American. A collectible ’50s Fest T-shirt also is available featuring a hand-drawn illustration of an iconic 1956 Mercury Montclair owned by Gerald Paraska of Houston.

The ’50s Fest and Car Cruise is organized and presented by Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful Inc., a nonprofit Main Street program that operates in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Downtown Center.

Funded by the state Department of Community and Economic Development, Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful represents a community endeavor to preserve and revitalize historic downtown Waynesburg and raise awareness of the educational, cultural and historical opportunities, as well as the convenience of shopping, associated with the town.
