Philadelphia high-rise imploded for new housing
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Housing officials in Philadelphia imploded a vacant 16-story apartment building as they prepare to build for new affordable housing.
The Philadelphia Housing Authority will replace the Queen Lane apartments with a mix of low-rise flats, walk-ups and townhouses. They said the new housing will be more in keeping with the character of the Germantown neighborhood.
The implosion was several years in the making as the housing agency worked to move Queen Lane residents to other subsidized housing. They hope the new $22 million, 55-unit housing project will spur economic development in the neighborhood.
The agency said the apartment house was imploded at 7:15 a.m.
