Pulitzer-winning cartoonist Auth dies of cancer

PHILADELPHIA – A Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist who worked for more than 40 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer has died. Tony Auth was 72.

Auth’s death was announced by NewsWorks/WHYY, where he was the artist-in-residence.

Auth died Sunday after a two-year battle with brain cancer. According to his website, he was married with two adult children.

Auth worked at the Inquirer for 41 years starting in 1971. He a won the Pulitzer for editorial cartoons in 1976 and was a finalist twice after that.

In 2010, the Pulitzer board praised “his masterful simplicity in expressing consistently fearless positions on national and local issues.”

He began working at WHYY after leaving the Inquirer.
