Cal U. student waives hearing in assault case
A California University of Pennsylvania student accused of assaulting a school police officer earlier this month waived her case to court after the most serious charge against her was withdrawn by the prosecution.
Destini Joy Chisolm, 19, of Blairsville, was accused of punching and kicking Officer Jaimie Quintero on Sept. 5 when he was called for a report of a domestic dispute in a dormitory room at Residence Hall A.
While another officer was talking with a male suspect in the incident, Quintero talked with Chisolm. She reportedly admitted to the officer she had consumed alcohol. When she was told by Quintero that she was not free to leave until he obtained her information for a citation, she allegedly became belligerent and disorderly. When he tried to place her in restraints so he could take her to a secured area so he could obtain her information, she allegedly assaulted the officer. Chisolm is accused of trying to kick Quintero and spitting in his face.
Chisolm initially was charged with three counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault, as well as resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, harassment and underage drinking.
The aggravated assault charges were dismissed, and she waived a hearing on the other charges during a proceeding Monday before District Judge Joshua Kanalis.
Kanalis made her bond $25,000 unsecured instead of a straight $25,000 bond, based on an agreement between the prosecution and public defender’s office. She was released from Washington County jail Monday afternoon. Formal arraignment on the charges is set for Nov. 19.
Chisolm also will face disciplinary proceedings at the school.
