Woodland owners plan meeting on forestland
Southwest PA Woodland Owners will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the basement of the Old Concord Presbyterian Church in Concord, just east off Route 18 in Washington County, to discuss the topic of managing your forestland.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, SWPWO will tour The Perkey Tree farm and the Thistle Tree farm, both in western Greene County.
At the Wednesday meeting, members will hear contrasting strategies and styles of how three SWPWO members – the Burnhams, the Thistles and the Perkeys – oversee their tree farms.
This is a good forum to pick up practical tips for your management plans and to learn about available resources.
The tour Saturday will begin at the Perkey farm where the results of successive crop tree thinning will be observed and visit site where forestry assistance programs have been used.
The group will then go a few miles southeast to the Thistle farm where the topics will be tree plantation establishment and deer protection measures.
Those planning to take the tour should meet at 12:30 p.m. at building 10 at the Greene County Fairgrounds or go directly to Perkey Tree Farm near Rutan.
These meetings are free and open to the public. For the field day Saturday, wear appropriate clothing for the weather and shoes for walking and bring water.
