Farmers’ market supports local growers
WAYNESBURG – When you come to shop today at Waynesburg Farmers’ Market, consider buying something extra.
This week the market is doing its part for “Harvest for the Hungry,” a regional weeklong event that gives farmers’ market shoppers a fun, charitable way to support local growers while giving back to families in need.
“We’re doing this in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank,” Waynesburg market manager Julia Young said.
“We’re encouraging our shoppers to buy an extra bag of produce today and donate it to the Corner Cupboard Food Bank, which distributes to 11 food pantries in our area. What gets donated today will be given out at the Wayne Township food distribution Friday. Corner Cupboard assures me that they will refrigerate all produce donations so that it can be nice and fresh.”
Young, who will be manning the market booth on High Street where the reserved parking spaces await shoppers, will have more information on the county’s ongoing hunger programs and some thank you gifts for givers as well.
“We have Buy Fresh Buy Local bumper stickers as a thank you and you can donate canned goods as well as produce. Our vendors have indicated that they will likely make produce donations in addition to what is purchased for donation.”
According to Leah Smith, Western Region Director of PASA, nine farmers’ markets are participating in five counties, including Greene. “We hope that this event promotes the amazing farmers’ markets in our region, and increases the accessibility of fresh local food to our neighbors in need,” Smith said
Waynesburg Farmers’ Market is part of Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful and supported in part through the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
