Central Greene board receives updates from district architect
WAYNESBURG – David McLean, architect for Central Greene School District, gave a progress report to the board Tuesday on the renovation of the Waynesburg Central High School auditorium, security upgrades in the district and an ongoing feasibility study at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School.
The auditorium project was delayed when the delivery date for the seats was extended. The new completion date for the auditorium renovation is Oct. 27, McLean said. The sound and lighting systems are “pretty much in place,” he said, noting a final sound test cannot be completed until the seats are installed as these will affect the acoustics.
McLean said the feasibility study would be ready for presentation at the November board meeting. The biggest challenge at the middle school is the existing heating and air conditioning system, he said. Parts for the system are hard to come by, if they are available at all, and the maintenance staff “has their hands full trying to keep it working,” he said.
If the board would decide to construct a new middle school, the HVAC system would remain in use for at least three years before a new building could be built, McLean said.
A lengthy discussion followed regarding the finish of a security door installed at the high school. McLean said the options of fixing the door would be to either stain it or paint it. He said stain would be the better route, providing it would cover the grain.
The cost to replace the door would be between $15,000 and $20,000 according to McLean.
“We want it to coordinate with the other doors in the school, not just something thrown up to fit,” board member Andrew Corfont said, telling McLean the board would take the situation under advisement and get back to him.
McLean went into detail regarding change orders for the district security improvements and auditorium renovation. The board approved $949.35 as the overall net addition following McLean’s breakdown of the changes. Credits resulted from the deletion of unnecessary fire shutters at the high school, changing the color of grid and ceiling tiles in the auditorium and changes to a control room counter in the auditorium.
Net additions came from security upgrades that included a structural support for an aluminum storefront and the adjustment of door systems and lights. The auditorium additions were the result of patching and finishing holes where six lights were removed, patching of a bulkhead, carpet reducer stripping and an addition of a splitter to allow operation of different lighting systems from one location.
