42 quilts documented by historical foundation
ROGERSVILLE – Forty-two quilts were documented by Western Pennsylvania Quilt Documentation Project volunteers Sept. 12 and 13 at \ Rogersville United Methodist Church.
These historians are on a mission to record the sewing heritage of Southwestern Pennsylvania women, one quilt at a time. Because this area has rich and varied sewing traditions, which led to the creation of hundreds of handmade quilts over the past 200 years, the documentation process can bring these family treasures to light and save the information for future generations.
The documentation process includes measuring, photographing, dating fabric, identifying the pattern and recording the story of the quilt. Many types of handmade quilts were recorded in Greene County such as patchwork, applique, embroidered and crazy quilts from the 1880s to 2000. The quilts’ information will be entered in a database at http://www.quiltindex.org.
The quilt documentation project is sponsored by the Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation and is funded through the Foster McCarl Foundation.
Ten counties of Southwestern Pennsylvania were included in the project: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, Westmoreland and Greene.
Linda Jones of the Pine Tree Quilt Shop in Waynesburg coordinated the Greene County project and the Rogersville United Methodist Church hosted the event.
A future documentation day may be scheduled if there is sufficient interest. Please call the Pine Tree Quilt Shop at 724-833-9147 if interested in documentation of your quilts.
