DA: Hunter could be charged for shot that hit infant
CLUNE (AP) – A prosecutor says he’ll likely decide this week whether to charge a hunter who fired a shot that pierced the skull of a 6-day-old infant who was being cradled by his father on their couch.
Indiana County District Attorney Pat Dougherty says the hunter had an agricultural deer control permit when he fired the shot that wounded the boy about 7 p.m. Thursday. The bullet came through the window of the home near Saltsburg, about 35 miles east of Pittsburgh.
The child was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and is in the intensive care unit where his parents have requested his condition and name not be released.
The hunter has been cooperating with investigators. Dougherty says the case appears to be an accidental shooting, but questions remain about whether he followed state hunting regulations.
