Historical Society plans two events

2 min read

Greene County Historical Society will be holding two big events in October. The opening reception at the museum for a new exhibit on the Civil War will be held Sunday, and the annual Harvest Festival begins Oct. 11.

The new exhibit, “Blue, Gray, and Greene: The Civil War in Greene County,” will feature Heinz History Center’s Traveling Civil War Exhibit.

The reception, which is free, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. A showing of the film, “Gettysburg,” will follow at 4:15 p.m. in the agricultural barn theater.

The opening will give those who attend a behind-the-scenes look and a rare opportunity to discuss everything they see at the museum with its board, staff and other guests.

The exhibit was a collaborative effort between the historical society and various museums, re-enactors and private collectors in Greene County.

There will be light refreshments and Doug Wilson, radio personality and avid Civil War re-enactor, will speak.

A week later, the 43rd annual Harvest Festival will take place.

The festival will be held Oct. 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Harvest Festival showcases the best in local crafters, music, food, demonstrators and re-enactors. Admission is $5 a person; children under six are free.

More than 40 vendors will be at the event. This year, the society is happy to feature performances by the Squonk Opera and the Weedrags Sunday.

The festival also includes a children’s area with games, activities and various food vendors, from soup and candies to hot dogs and funnel cake.

This year, the society made a parking change. A shuttle will be available to the museum grounds from Central Greene High School. The shuttle will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

The historical museum is on Rolling Meadows Road east of Waynesburg. For more information about the events, call the museum office at 724-627-3204 or by email at gchsmuseumevents@gmail.com.
