Collection planned for hard-to-recycle items

2 min read

The Pennsylvania Resources Council will host the first of six 2015 “hard-to-recycle” collection events April 11 to enable individuals to drop off e-waste/computers, cellphones, CFLs, microwave ovens and polystyrene packaging material at no cost.

The first PRC hard-to-recycle collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills (parking lot near Dingbats) in Frazer Township.

“The overall popularity of these collection events continues to increase, and, as a result, PRC is expanding the number of collections from four to six events this year, including a collection in a parking lot outside Heinz Field,” PRC Regional Director Justin Stockdale said.

While most items – including computers, CFLs and expanded polystyrene packaging material – will be collected free of charge, individuals will pay a nominal fee to drop off alkaline batteries, tires, small Freon appliances, fluorescent tubes and small kitchen appliances.

“Our biggest challenge at these collections is the sheer volume of old television sets dropped off. While the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has banned TVs from landfills, very few resources are available to the public to support the collection of TVs for recycling,” said Stockdale. “PRC relies on participants’ financial support to host the events and is suggesting a $5 donation per television be made to ensure PRC can continue to host these vital collection events.”

• April 25 – Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills 590 Pittsburgh Mills Circle, Tarentum;

• May 9 – Washington Mall, 301 Oak Spring Road, Washington;

• Aug. 22 – Allegheny County Airport public parking lot, West Mifflin;

• Aug. 29 – Heinz Field Gold 1A parking lot, Art Rooney Ave., Pittsburgh;
