Cumberland supervisors prepare for road projects
CARMICHAELS – Cumberland Township supervisors awarded a contract Monday afternoon for various-sized stone as they prepare for the summer road maintenance season.
The supervisors also agreed to advertise for asphalt and road oil and for bids to pave roads in the Cumberland Township portion of Rices Landing.
Township officials already began some preparatory work for the summer road maintenance program, sweeping roads and patching potholes, township supervisor Bill Nicholson said.
“We can’t start on the roads until the weather gets nicer, until it gets warm and stays warm for a while,” he said, adding the township also must wait until the asphalt plants open and it receives its supply of asphalt and road oil.
The supervisors voted to advertise for bids to pave streets in the township’s section of Rices Landing. The streets include Sidney Avenue and Young, Walters, Walton, Frick and Breeze streets.
The township tarred and chipped the roads in the past as part of regular maintenance activities and will now pave them, the supervisors said earlier.
As part of the summer maintenance schedule, township road crews, starting May 4, will begin working four days a week, 10 hours a day, instead of the normal five-day a week schedule.
The supervisors received two bids for stone and awarded the contract to Hanson Aggregates. The supervisor also awarded a contract for fuel to Jacobs Petroleum, which submitted the combined low bid for gasoline and diesel fuel. The company bid $1.77 a gallon for 22,000 gallons of gasoline and $1.8379 per gallon for 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel.
In other business, the supervisors announced the township’s cleanup days will be held Saturday and Sunday. From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, residents can bring their unwanted household goods to the municipal building. The township will not accept any electronics, including televisions, tires or oil and other liquids.
The supervisors voted to appoint Judy Armstrong deputy tax collector. Armstrong will take the place of tax collector Pam Whyel should Whyel become incapacitated.
A law enacted last year asked tax collectors to appoint a deputy who can assist the tax collector in collecting taxes and work should the tax collector become incapacitated.
The supervisors approved an updated heavy hauling agreement with Energy Corporation of America for Mohr Road, Long Shaft Road and One Armed Lady Road.
They also accepted the resignation of part-time police officer Roger Frazee, effective March 2.
