One dead in Hanover construction accident
A construction worker for Green Acres Contracting Company was killed Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle in an active work zone on Route 22 in Hanover Township.
Legrant Blackwell, 43, of Connellsville, was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m. shortly after the accident occurred about four miles from the West Virginia state line, according to a report from Washington County Coroner Tim Warco.
The driver of a construction vehicle struck Blackwell, who was walking on the road, while driving in reverse in the westbound lane. According to a report from Pennsylvania State Police, Blackwell was placing guide rail along the highway.
Blackwell was trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene from blunt force trauma, Warco said. The driver, who was not named, reported Blackwell was in his blind spot.
Occupational Safety & Health Administration will conduct an investigation. Hanover Fire Department and Ambulance & Chair EMS assisted at the scene.
