Man shot by state trooper after standoff at prison dies

GETTYSBURG (AP) – An armed man shot by a Pennsylvania state trooper after a standoff outside a county prison has died.

The York County coroner’s office says 31-year-old Jess Leipold was pronounced dead Friday afternoon. Leipold was shot Thursday afternoon at Adams County Prison.

Authorities say Leipold was dressed in camouflage when he rode his bicycle to the prison near Gettysburg and displayed a gun to a guard in the lobby.

District Attorney Shawn Wagner says Leipold fired six or eight times into the air and onto the ground during a half-hour standoff just outside the prison entrance and was shot after he shouldered a rifle and pointed it at the entrance.

Wagner says his preliminary investigation suggests the shooting was justified and “police showed restraint.”
