Closing arguments underway in 1979 NYC missing boy trial

NEW YORK (AP) — Jurors are hearing closing arguments at the trial of a man accused of killing 6-year-old Etan Patz (AY’-tahn payts) in 1979.

Defense attorney Harvey Fishbein says prosecutors have not shown that a 2012 confession by Pedro Hernandez was credible.

Fishbein said Monday that there’s no evidence to support charges that he killed a child.

Etan’s body was never found.

Hernandez says on video that he choked Etan in a convenience store basement. He says he put Etan’s body in a bag and the bag in a box and walked it down the street.

The defense says the admissions are the fictional ravings of a mentally ill man with a low IQ.

Fishbein says the real killer is another longtime suspect who was never charged.

Prosecutors say Hernandez’s confession is sound.
