Pigs die in small barn fire

1 min read

Several pigs died but other livestock were able to be saved from a fire Sunday night in a Smith Township barn.

Firefighters from Slovan were called about 8:20 p.m. to the barn owned by Michael Coyne, 155 Atlas-Cherry Valley Road. Fire Chief Brandon Kriznik said the fire was contained to a small area of the barn, but he said three or four pigs were killed.

Kriznik said the fire appeared to be electrical.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Midway and Avella, and Jefferson and Mt. Pleasant townships. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.
