NESQUEHONING (AP) – A Pennsylvania driver is dead after swerving to avoid a porcupine in the roadway.

Police say 32-year-old Efrain Rivera’s car hit the animal before crashing into a storm drain and flipping on its roof around 5:30 a.m. Sunday in Nesquehoning.

A coroner says the Lehighton man suffered blunt force trauma to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The porcupine also died.

The crash closed Route 209 for several hours.

Nesquehoning is about 25 miles northwest of Allentown.
