PT board creates assistant athletic director position
McMURRAY – Peters Township School Board agreed Monday to create an assistant athletic director position to help manage the district’s athletic program in a move that is hoped to bring an eventual cost savings.
The job, which could pay between $30,000 to $40,000 a year, is new for the district. It is hoped the person will take over some of the duties held by other employees and volunteers.
The position would consist mostly of daytime hours, said Brian Geyer, the district’s athletic director.
According to the job description, the assistant athletic director would help Geyer manage and operate the interscholastic programs and facilities in the district. Applicants must have a high school degree and an undergraduate degree in athletic administration, sports management and education, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Board member Rebecca Bowman questioned the need to spend $30,000 to $40,000 in salary for a person that essentially would be an administrator.
“I do not question that Mr. Geyer needs assistance,” she said.
Geyer said the job is not all administrative work. He said the assistant athletic director must have coaching certification.
“This is classroom stuff,” he said.
The board is not expected to advertise the position until the 2015-2016 budget is passed in June, said Shelly Belcher, district spokeswoman.
