COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Joe Holbrook, who spent 42 years reporting the weather to Columbus residents for WBNS-TV, has died at 87.

His family told the station Holbrook died Saturday at The Forum at Knightsbridge, a senior living center.

As chief meteorologist for Channel 10 for decades, Holbrook was a staple of the station’s newscasts until his retirement in 1992. He took viewers through major weather events, including the Xenia tornado of 1974 and the Great Blizzard of 1978.

Born on a Pike County farm, Holbrook spent several years in radio before moving to WBNS about 1950.

Because he was an avid amateur pilot, he was fascinated by weather and chose it as his area of concentration.

Holbrook was known for mentoring young broadcasters and for teaching weather lessons in local elementary school classrooms.
