Schedule announced for upcoming event

CARMICHAELS – Plans are under way for the 62nd annual Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show with registrations now being accepted for the King Coal 5K run/walk and the Sara L. Ruth Memorial Golf Outing.
Both events will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, and will kick off this year’s coal show, which runs through Aug. 29. The theme for this year’s show is “Coal Built America.”
This will be the second year at the coal show for the 5K run/walk.
The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Carmichaels fire hall. A Kids Fun Run will be held after the 5K race.
Registration forms can be downloaded at www.kingcoalshow.org and can be mailed to King Coal Association, Attention: 5K, P.O. Box 275, Carmichaels, PA 15320 with a check payable to King Coal Association.
Registration on race day will begin at 7:45 a.m. at the fire hall. The cost to register is $25 for adults and children 12 and older and $10 for children under 12.
All registered runners and walkers will receive a race T-shirt. Shirts are not guaranteed to late registrants. Participants under 18 years of age must have the signature of a parent or legal guardian on their registration form to enter.
Entries for the annual Sara L. Ruth Memorial Golf Outing are due Saturday, Aug. 9, and can be made by sending a check payable to the King Coal Association to King Coal Association Inc., Attention: Golf Outing, P.O. Box 275, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
The outing, featuring a four-person scramble format, will be held at Carmichaels Golf Course and is limited to 36 teams.
Registration will be held at 8 a.m. and a shot-gun start will begin the event at 9 a.m. In recognition of the outing’s 25th anniversary, the outing will include three hole-in-one prizes.
The entry fee is $60 a person and $240 a team and covers food, beverages and prizes. Prizes will be awarded and lunch served at the end of the scramble.

Other events scheduled for the coal show include the Coal Queen Pageant, which will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, in the Carmichaels Area High School auditorium; the annual pet parade, Wednesday, Aug. 26; and the annual bicycle parade, Thursday, Aug. 27.
Carnival rides will be set up on the grounds of the Carmichaels-Cumberland Township Fire Hall beginning Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The state mine rescue first aid contest will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25; the state bituminous mine rescue contest, Wednesday, Aug. 26; and the state mine benchman and examiner contest, Thursday, Aug. 27. All will be held at the Carmichaels High School stadium.
The coal show will come to an end Saturday, Aug. 29, with a car show at Wana B Park: the Charles Workman Memorial Car Parade and the King Coal Parade.
