Teen jailed in theft at dad’s house

2 min read

An East Bethlehem Township man was arrested Wednesday by township police on numerous charges including burglary and theft, and now faces more charges after police say he also stole a car in Vestaburg.

Shawn A. Chesney, 18, of 84 Black Dog Hollow Road, Clarksville, is accused of breaking into his father’s workshop and stealing a Honda all-terrain vehicle, helmet and five-gallon gasoline can July 15 and stealing a Kindle Fire on July 30 from the garage.

Chesney also allegedly took a 2010 Dodge Avenger without permission Wednesday and also allegedly had stolen a Honda Civic.

Chesney’s father reportedly told police Chief Mark Pompe he had told his son to never come back to the home on Black Dog Hollow for any reason. He told police Chesney broke off the lock to get into the workshop and steal the all-terrain vehicle. Chesney’s father also told Pompe he pulled into his driveway July 30 and saw his son running from an attached garage with the electronic tablet.

On Wednesday, Pompe got a call to check a vehicle at 71 Lawrence Ave. in Fredericktown. Police found the younger Chesney in the car, and he allegedly told police his mother gave him the vehicle Tuesday afternoon. However, the owner of the vehicle told police she did not know the car was missing from her Marianna home.

Police said they also learned Chesney had stolen the keys to a Honda in Vestaburg after compact discs that had been in that vehicle were found in the Dodge. Pompe had taken a report of the stolen Honda after it was found Wednesday morning with a blown engine on Horton Road in Centerville.

Chesney was arraigned before District Judge Larry Hopkins on charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle, theft, receiving stolen property in connection with the theft of the Dodge and burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and defiant trespass for the alleged break-ins at his father’s workshop. He was placed in Washington County jail on $55,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 24 before District Judge Joshua Kanalis on those charges.

Chesney will be arraigned later on charges of theft, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle in connection with the theft of the Honda.
