Canonsburg toddler dies

1 min read

Dean Gillum, the 2-year-old boy from Canonsburg who was declared brain dead following a near-drowning, has died. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office placed the time of death at 6:13 p.m. Wednesday.

Dean sustained serious injuries after falling into an above-ground swimming pool in his backyard July 30. He was declared brain dead by the medical examiner at 1:05 p.m. last Sunday, but remained on a ventilator at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

The child and his parents, Laura and Paul Gillum, moved into their house on Linda Court less than two weeks before the accident.

Dean was playing with a toy lawn mower that day when his mother went inside to get him juice. Laura couldn’t find him when she returned and found him facedown in the pool. She pulled him out, called 911 and performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived.
