WAYNESBURG – This year’s Greene County Fair will have the new addition of a monster truck rally to go along with the long-time staples of animals and carnival rides.

Fair Manager Larry Marshall said he expects a big crowd for the monster truck jam beginning at 8 p.m. Monday that will bring the touring series through Waynesburg to perform and compete.

“We think it will be a big draw. It’s funny because that’s what everyone is talking about,” Marshall said. “They love the noise and the vehicles. We’ve tried to give people something that they want.”

The fair officially started yesterday with the 4-H roundup, although the events, entertainment, carnival rides and animal exhibits begin today and run through Saturday.

“I think with the entertainment in the evenings, we try to give people a little bang for the buck and try to bring them to the fair,” Marshall said. “Not everyone comes to the fair for the animals or the rides. We try to bring a happy-medium mix.”

It will also be the second year for the dog show scheduled for noon today. Marshall said that event is designed to attract young kids who hopefully will return to the fair for many years.

“We try to accommodate the kids so they’re a part of the fair and will continue going, Marshall said. “Of course, you’ve got to have the agricultural exhibits, but you have to have something everyone wants to see and is interested in.”

The schedule includes many exhibits people have come to expect from the fair, including carnival rides, horse and tractor pulls, a demolition derby and 4-H market lamb and market steer shows, along with many other events. Marshall said Thursday night will still be the “climax to the week” with the 4-H livestock sale.

Debbie Stephenson, the fair’s treasurer and secretary, said people will also enjoy a new band performing Thursday night called The Gospel Harmony Boys, which is from Charleston, W.Va. The Chris Higbee Band will perform Wednesday night.

Some multiple day attractions include Dennis Beach’s Custom Wood Carving Show and a barnyard petting zoo.

“We try to bring the best we can to the community and get all ages at the fair,” Stephenson said. “This year, we’ve rearranged some things on the schedule and moved things around to make it more diversified and get people down there so they have a great time when they come down.”
