Few file as independent, third-party

2 min read

The deadline for independent and third-party candidates was this week, but only a handful jumped into the fray for the Nov. 3 general election, according to nomination papers filed with the Washington County elections office.

Valarie Caprini of Deemston Borough, a retired school district business manager, is running as an independent candidate in Region III of Bethlehem-Center School District, which includes, along with her home community, Beallsville, Marianna and West Bethlehem Township. Also on the ballot are Karen Drill and Christine Hundertmark, whose names appeared on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, securing both parties’ nominations.

Those voting in November will be asked to choose two candidates.

In the Mon Valley community of Allenport, Paul G. Keefer Jr. is running as an independent candidate for a two-year term on borough council. Elections office records show no one filed as a candidate for this seat in the primary election, and no one garnered enough write-in votes to secure a nomination.

Demosthenes (Demo) Agoris filed for two-year and four-year seats on Houston Borough Council, in addition to tax collector and constable, under the banner of the Libertarians of Houston Party.

Three candidates are to be elected to the four-year term. Already on the ballot are James W. Dodd, a Democrat; Charles Fife, a Republican; and Walter Nesic and Ron Hancher, who secured write-in nominations on both ballots.

Sharon Luongo, seeking a two-year term, secured both the Democratic and Republican nominations for Houston tax collector.

No candidate from either major party filed for Houston constable.
