A Monongahela man was arrested Friday night after he allegedly assaulted his 29-year-old girlfriend and threatened her with a knife at their home.

James Frank Cain II, 35, is charged with aggravated assault, harassment, simple assault, possession of paraphernalia and terroristic threats.

Police were called just before midnight Friday to the McDonald’s restaurant on West Main Street for a report of a woman with three children in her car who fled from her home after she reportedly went there for help. Police found the 29-year-old wearing only a bra and covered with a blanket. Police could see swelling and redness to her left eye and a swollen lip. The children were in the back seat.

The woman told police she and Cain were arguing most of the night. During the argument, he reportedly pulled her hair and pushed her around. She told police after putting the children to bed, she got into bed. She and Cain reportedly continued to argue. During the argument, Cain pulled out a folding knife, opened it, held it to her head and threatened to kill her, police said. The woman told police he grabbed her by the hair, twisted her neck and struck her in the face. She said she managed to break free, push him onto the floor and wrestle away the knife. She then got the kids and drove to the restaurant parking lot. She told police she was not able to call because Cain took her cellphone during the confrontation. She told police one of her children tossed the knife into the yard as they were leaving.

Cain was gone when police went to their home. While they were speaking with the alleged victim, her cellphone rang and it was found in the bedroom. Cain told her he went to his mother’s home, but she did not answer. He was later stopped in New Eagle by Carroll Township police. Cain reportedly told police his girlfriend assaulted him and denied pulling a knife. The knife was found in a neighbor’s yard.

Cain was arraigned before District Judge David Mark and placed in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Aug. 28.
