U.S. Airways to skip Pittsburgh for ceremonial final flight

1 min read

PITTSBURGH (AP) – A former Pittsburgh county executive said U.S. Airways is insulting the city that helped give it its start.

A ceremonial flight for U.S. Airways Flight 1939 is slated for Oct. 16 and will land in Philadelphia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Phoenix; and San Francisco. It notably ignores the city where the airline began.

U.S. Airways recently merged with Texas-based American Airlines. An American Airlines spokesman tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the city is not currently a hub for the airline.

Former Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey said Thursday the snub represents “maybe the last and final insult.”

American Airlines is shutting down the airline’s flight operations control center in Moon Sunday. About 650 jobs are going to Texas.
