DA, coroner: Prison guard killed man, then himself

1 min read

NANTY GLO (AP) — Authorities say an Indiana County prison guard entered a home and shot a man to death, then fled to his own home and turned the weapon on himself.

The Johnstown Tribune-Democrat reports that the murder-suicide occurred early Saturday in Nanty Glo, Cambria County.

Prosecutors and the coroner’s office said 43-year-old Paul Hoover has been identified as the man who shot 43-year-old Harry Ondriezek Jr. shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities said another person in the home called 911 and officers went to Hoover’s residence, where Hoover shot himself in the yard in their presence shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

Hoover was a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution-Pine Grove in Indiana. District Attorney Kelly Callihan said the motive for the shooting is unknown.
