Historical exhibit opening soon
Greene County Historical Society is opening a new exhibit called “Greene Power: The Energy Industry in Greene County Exhibit” Sept. 12.
The energy industry is a complex topic and has affected many people’s lives in Greene County. From 1840, when oil was discovered near Dunkard Creek to the modern debates over the impact of the natural gas industry, Greene County has always felt the social, political and economic impacts of the industry.
The exhibit will create a narrative that displays the pros and cons of the energy industry over the years and how it shapes all aspects of Greene County culture and heritage.
Eben Williams, administrator of the historical society, said he hopes this exhibit raises some discussions within the community.
“I hope the exhibit will educate the public that there are two sides of the story,” Williams said. “And to show them to make an opinion based on the whole story not just an initial reaction.”
Old photographs, actual equipment, models, oral histories and maps will educate the public on this impact while celebrating the energy industries’ role as the major employer in Greene County.
“We will have information on the coal mining disasters, and issues with labor,” Williams said. “Also some stuff on the modern controversy that we have.”
The opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 12. This event is free to the public and light refreshments will be served.
