AVELLA – An Avella woman narrowly avoided being hit by a train Friday morning on the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway tracks near Avella Sportsmen’s Club on Route 50.

According to Chuck Kerns, Avella Volunteer Fire Department captain, emergency responders were dispatched about 8:20 a.m. for a report that an engineer was able to stop the train before hitting the woman.

“She was lying on the tracks unconscious,” Kerns said. “The train stopped, though.”

The victim, identified by state police as Megan Moore, did not regain consciousness but was breathing when she was taken by Ambulance & Chair Service to Washington Hospital. A medical helicopter was dispatched but was not used.

A call to Washington Hospital regarding Moore’s condition was not immediately returned.

State Trooper Matt Jardine said the incident is being investigated.

West Middletown Volunteer Fire Department also assisted.
