HARRISBURG – Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala is seeking the Democratic nomination for attorney general.

Two people familiar with Zappala’s plans confirmed Wednesday that he’ll declare his candidacy next week. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they said the official announcement would come from the candidate.

Zappala is the son of a former chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He has been Allegheny County’s chief law enforcement officer since 1998.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane has said she hopes to seek re-election next year, but the first-term Democrat faces a number of hurdles. The state Supreme Court has indefinitely suspended her law license as she fights perjury charges and the state Senate is considering taking steps to remove Kane from office.

Two other Democrats also are running. Two Republicans are competing for the GOP nomination.
