Burglary charge: A Charleroi man was placed in Washington County jail on charges of attempted burglary and criminal attempt to commit burglary. According to the criminal complaint, Allan Horvath, 52, of 726 Lincoln Ave., was found in the walk-in safe of John Tener Library, 638 Fallowfield Ave., by the librarian after the library closed Dec. 3. He was arrested by Charleroi police and arraigned Tuesday before District Judge James Ellis, who set bond at $5,000 cash. He has a preliminary hearing Dec. 22 before District Judge Larry Hopkins.
Drug charges: Shari Populo, 29, no address listed, was arrested on a probation bench warrant for drug and drug paraphernalia possession after a traffic stop Tuesday along Spruce Way, police said.
Assault case: Phillip A. Spears, 24, of 1013 Henry St., Langeloth, is charged by township police with simple assault and reckless endangerment, court records show. Police accuse Spears of shoving his wife, Asheley, to the floor Wednesday while she was holding an infant. District Judge Gary Havelka released him on unsecured bond.
Welfare fraud charge: Nicole Watson, 42, of 970 Williams St., Washington, was charged by the state Welfare Department with welfare fraud in court records filed Wednesday. Watson is accused of failing to disclose a member of her household earned wages while she collected $2,169 in food assistance between September 2014 and February. She will receive the charge in a summons from the office of District Judge Robert Redlinger.
Animal abuse: A husky with a license identifying it as Bella was found shot in an alley across from 130 Grove St. Tuesday, police said, after a woman called about someone breaking into a residence at 501 Fayette St. Police said the woman reported hearing a gunshot and took a photo of a man fleeing the premises. A suspect matching the description was taken in for questioning, but no charges have been filed. The dog was returned to its owner at 501 Fayette. The condition of the animal was not immediately known.
