CHESWICK (AP) – Authorities have identified the woman killed in a Western Pennsylvania apartment fire over the weekend.

The Allegheny County medical examiner tells WTAE-TV that 52-year-old Carol Alese died in the blaze Sunday in Harmar Township.

Chief Kevin Funkhouser of the Allegheny Valley Fire Department says crews found smoke coming from a second-story unit just before noon. He says the victim was found on the second floor.

Neighbors tell WPXI-TV the woman tossed a cat out of the window but was unable to escape. Funkhouser says a neighbor tried to help Alese before firefighters arrived, but couldn’t get past the flames.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
