WAYNESBURG – A Waynesburg man accused of fondling a 12-year-old girl on multiple occasions three years ago pleaded no contest Tuesday.
Adam D. Courtwright, 43, of 596 Bowlby St., entered a no contest plea to three counts each of indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of a minor. By pleading no contest, Courtwright denies guilt but admits facts stated in the indictment.
Courtwright will be sentenced by Greene County President Judge Farley Toothman after being evaluated to determine if, under Megan’s Law, he is required to register as a sexual offender.
However, the judge’s order states Courtwright’s plea offer calls for a sentence of 5 years in the county intermediate punishment program, the first year of which will be served under house arrest with a GPS and alcohol monitoring bracelet.
Police said Courtwright fondled the girl at his home in September 2012 by putting his hand down the girl’s shirt and pants. The girl’s mother informed investigators after the last incident.
Police interviewed Courtwright and he admitted to rubbing the girl’s back, legs and buttocks. However, he declined to give a written statement saying “it would make him look guilty,” police said.
Police interviewed the girl the following month and she told them Courtwright fondled her at his house. At the time, however, the girl said she was “not ready to follow through with the charges” and as a result no charges were filed then.
The girl and her mother returned to police in March to discuss the incidents. Investigators did not say what prompted the girl to return this year to be interviewed again regarding the matter.
Courtwright remains free on $20,000 bond.
