Judith L. Fisher, 75, of South Strabane Township announced Wednesday she intends to seek a nomination for Democratic Washington County commissioner.

Fisher was Democratic jury commissioner for 20 years until 2013, when, exercising an option under an act of the legislature signed into law by then-Gov. Tom Corbett, the Washington County commissioners eliminated the position.

Fisher’s Republican counterpart, Richard Zimmerman, also lost his job. A challenge to the act went to the state Supreme Court, which eventually upheld it.

In her announcement, Fisher called for oil and gas revenues to be used for an education initiative that would pay for a county government internship program and the establishment of a Washington County gas and oil industry collaborative.

“Working with the Washington County Community Foundation, a local nonprofit charitable organization, I want to advocate establishing a Washington County Scholarship Fund for our children,” Fisher said in a news release. She also wants the county to offer residents a Washington County Community College.

Fisher is an elected Washington County Democratic Party committee member and an elected Pennsylvania Democratic Party committee member.

She is a graduate of California High School who attended California University. She and her husband, Robert, are the parents of two children.

Although women have run here on the Democratic ticket for a county commissioner, a female Democratic Party member has never been elected commissioner in Washington County.
