County Prothonotary Phyllis Ranko to retire

Washington County Prothonotary Phyllis Ranko Matheny announced Thursday that she would not seek re-election. Instead, Matheny looks forward to retiring and spending more time with her family.
“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all supporters, voters and the citizens of Washington County for the honor of serving as your prothonotary for 20 years,” she said in a news release. “I have kept my campaign promise to you, and I have continued to move the office forward. This journey is about to end. I look forward to continuing my wonderful family journey with my three adult children and my eight grandchildren.”
Matheny served five terms as prothonotary and boasts a total of 37 years of experience in the office. During that time, Matheny served nine years as deputy for Prothonotary Bob A. Franks, computerized the office and implemented the scanning of all documents.
Matheny’s only campaign promise was to be a full-time prothonotary. With the help of her family, friends and supporters, Matheny said she believes she fulfilled her promise.
