Police: Sex offender sneaked into museum, offered boy candy

1 min read

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Police say a sex offender pretended to be a grandfather tagging along for a field trip when a teacher caught him offering a 12-year-old boy candy at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Science Center.

Sherwood Stevenson was charged Wednesday with providing false identification to police, corruption and unlawful contact with minors and theft of services.

The 76-year-old Clinton resident is jailed without bail pending a Feb. 18 hearing.

Police say Stevenson sneaked into the science center, followed the boy’s gifted class and sat between him and a teacher in the center’s planetarium. A teacher alerted security when the boy denied knowing the man.

Stevenson pleaded guilty in 2011 to charges he fondling a 6-year-old boy on a Florida cruise.

Police say he hasn’t updated his Megan’s Law registration and skipped court-ordered treatment sessions.
