Ohio student’s death underscores domestic dangers

1 min read

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — The violent death of a Miami University junior highlights the danger of violence that can erupt from troubled relationships.

A state report found that half of the women murdered in Ohio in 2012 were killed by a current or former spouse or dating partner.

The college town of Oxford was rocked Feb. 1 when 21-year-old Rebecca Eldemire was shot in the head in the community’s first homicide in three decades. Police say her 27-year-old ex-boyfriend then fatally shot himself.

Domestic violence experts say violence can be triggered when one person is trying to end the relationship, threatening the other person with loss of control.

Within about 24 hours of the Oxford case, four more Ohioans died in apparent domestic relationship murder-suicides.
