University to hold 8th annual homeland security conference
A retired police chief and the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania will join two California University of Pennsylvania faculty members as speakers at Cal U.’s 8th annual Conference on Homeland and International Security.
“Assessing the Security Gaps in Our Criminal Justice System” will be the topic of the conference from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 27 in Steele Hall Mainstage Theatre, on the campus in California.
The conference is presented by the Department of Criminal Justice at Cal U., in collaboration with the Mon Valley NAACP and the NAACP State Conference Criminal Justice Committee.
Law enforcement officers’ use of deadly force has made headlines in recent months, and conference speakers will address these topics:
• “Managing Decisions in a Crisis Situation and the Integration of Deadly Force,” by Dr. Michael Hummel, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at Cal U.
• “Law Enforcement and Culture,” by Dr. Aref Al-Khattar, also of the Department of Criminal Justice.
• “Building Police and Community Relations,” by David Hickton, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania
• “Strategies to Reduce Officer-Involved Shootings,” by Chuck Drago, retired police chief and president of Drago Professional Consultants.
