A Washington man was charged with attempted homicide over accusations he fired a shotgun at his stepson as the victim ran from a fight the two had in their home Friday night.

Washington police also filed charges of aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm into a vehicle, making terroristic threats and reckless endangerment against Kevin Raney, 57, of 119 Murray Ave., court records state.

City police Chief Chris Luppino said investigators believe Raney went to his basement and grabbed the shotgun and a 9mm handgun after his stepson, Walter Holt III, 25, struck him in the face during a fight inside their residence about 10:45 p.m.

Raney responded by saying to Holt, “I’m going to kill you,” police alleged.

Holt then ran outside and hid behind a vehicle as Raney allegedly fired several rounds from the shotgun while he ran after Holt, who was not injured, police said.

Raney went back into the basement, where he was taken into custody by police without any further disturbances, Luppino said.

It was not immediately known Saturday what prompted the fight between the two men, police said.

Raney was sent to Washington County Jail on $100,000 bond set Saturday morning by District Judge James Ellis, court records show.
