Avella Area’s school board president announced over the weekend he plans to seek a Democratic nomination for Washington County commissioner in this year’s May primary.

Corey McConn of Cross Creek Township has served on the school board for 13 years, including the past nine as the board president, and works in the marketing department of Canonsburg-based Pennsylvania Transformer Technology Inc.

McConn said he decided to enter the race for commissioner because of concerns about the financial stability of the county.

He added he thinks county officials can better use royalty money paid by the natural gas industry.

“This is a county of so many great people and such great potential,” McConn said in a news release.

“What is needed is more thoughtful and focused leadership – leadership that is willing to work to make Washington County an even greater place to live.”

McConn added the county needs a diverse development strategy and the booming natural gas industry is a “golden opportunity for growth.”

In addition to his experience as school board president, McConn serves in roles on the Cross Creek zoning hearing board, Washington County Library System Board and Avella Library Board.

McConn graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1999 with bachelor’s degrees in history and political science.

McConn is the fifth Democrat to announce his candidacy for a seat on the board.

The others are former Canonsburg councilman A.J. Williams, former Washington County jury commissioner Judith Fisher and incumbents Harlan Shober and Larry Maggi.
