WAYNESBURG – Greene County Prison Board members Wednesday received a statistical overview of the jail’s operations in 2014.

Warden Harry Gillispie produced a comprehensive report showing total jail commitments in 2014 were 630, down from 878 in 2013, but slightly up from 548 in 2012. The number of males incarcerated in 2014 was 511, down from 528 in 2013, but up from 470 in 2012. The number of females placed in the county lockup dropped from 350 in 2013 to 119 last year. The number in 2012 was 128.

Gillispie said the average daily population in 2014 was 75 inmates, which included 69 from Greene County and six from Fayette County.

Leading the list of crimes resulting in jail time were, surprisingly, contempt charges (failure to appear, comply), both at the Common Pleas and magisterial level. There were 117 people jailed on bench warrants from Common Pleas court and 81 from the three district judges.

Those charged with driving under the influence numbered 56, exceeding those charged with drug violations that totaled 18. That number included seven for manufacture, delivery with intent to deliver; five for possession with intent to deliver; three for possession of a controlled substance; and three for possession of drug paraphernalia. Gillispie said it cost $88.25 a day to house one inmates, compared to $69.40 in 2013. The cost per meal per day was $2.37, down from $2.88 in 2013.

Gillispie also said last year, the jail collected $426,350 from Fayette County for housing its inmates; $9,260 from 21 inmates serving some type of weekend sentence and $47,544 from 21 inmates sentenced to work release. The jail turned over $25,784 in fines to the clerk of courts, compared with $14,164 for 17 inmates in 2013.

Gillispie said the county jail continues to house inmates from Fayette County (10 as of Wednesday), but the county is owed $50,800 for Fayette inmate costs for December 2014 and $28,800 for January.

Also as of Wednesday, the jail population was 57, and includes 46 males, four weekend males, six females and one weekend female.
