1 min read

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say the son of a retired Indiana University of Pennsylvania professor has been arrested and charged with homicide in her death.

Officials said police in the borough of Indiana found 72-year-old Ruth Shirey unconscious with beating injuries in her home early Friday and her car missing. She later died at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Hours later, police stopped her car near Altoona in Blair County and arrested 36-year-old Todd Royce Walters, who also lived in the home.

He was charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. Police said in a criminal complaint that they were told that he had been treated for mental health issues. Court documents don’t list an attorney for him.

Shirey was an emeritus geography professor who had taught at the school for 37 years.
