Canonsburg residents are cleaning up sidewalks after several inches of snow Saturday. Snow in the morning changed to a wintry mix in the afternoon.

It was warmer Saturday than it has been recently. That’s the good news.

The bad news, however, is the warmer air was accompanied by wet, heavy snow, which led to the cancellation of scores of weekend activities.

A system that started marching across the region around dawn Saturday dropped a little over two inches of snow on Washington County by the afternoon. Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Moon Township, anticipated another inch or two would fall before the storm made its exit.

And, it’s the cold weather of the last couple of days that could have led to a water line break on Route 19 near Waterdam Plaza in Peters Township Saturday. It left about 15 to 20 customers, mostly businesses in the area, without water service. Service was expected to be restored by Saturday evening.

Josephine Posti, a spokeswoman for Pennsylvania American Water, said it’s “hard to say” whether the recent round of subzero weather played a role in the water line rupturing, but it can be the culprit at this time of year.

Sporting events at several area schools were called off Saturday and Tanger Outlets in South Strabane Township posted on its website that it was closed because of inclement weather.

However, there weren’t many vehicle accidents to report, according to a Washington County 911 dispatcher, who said the number was “normal” for a Saturday.

Anyone hoping for relief from snow or cold will have to be patient. The region is set to plunge back into the deep freeze Monday, with a forecast high temperature of 11 on Monday, and a low temperature of minus 2. Temperatures are expected to be below normal through mid-March, Hendricks said.
