A retired Roscoe businessman announced he is seeking the Republican nomination for Washington County clerk of courts.

Gary W. Hoover, 57, said he helped to rebuild failing automobile dealerships and previously worked in law enforcement.

He said his experience in reorganizing, team building and customer service would make him an effective leader.

“The people of Washington County deserve so much more than the status quo,” Hoover said in a news release. “It’s time for a change. It’s time to end the era of career politicians and bring the clerk’s office into the 21st century.”

He said one of his goals as clerk of courts would be to incorporate better technology into the office to ensure cases proceed through the county’s criminal justice system more effectively.

“We should never have to fear that criminals may be set free because of technicalities again,” he said.

Hoover previously worked with the West Brownsville and Donora police departments and served as a special deputy sheriff and deputy state constable.

He grew up in the coal-patch community of Vesta 6 and said, if elected, he would serve no more than two terms.
