Students to serve on mission trips

WAYNESBURG – During spring break, 55 students from Waynesburg University will serve outside of the Waynesburg community, both domestically and abroad. University faculty and staff will lead three mission service trips covering a variety of academic and professional interests.

The projects include partnerships with The Pittsburgh Project in Pittsburgh, Habitat for Humanity Work Camp in Concord, N.C., and Strong Missions in Carrillos, Costa Rica.

Twenty students will serve The Pittsburgh Project for a weeklong work camp March 7 -13. Adrienne Tharp, coordinator of the Bonner Scholar program, will serve as trip leader.

Located on the north side of Pittsburgh, TPP is a Christian community development organization that serves vulnerable homeowners in neighborhoods throughout the city by providing home repairs. TPP is committed to meeting the needs of the Pittsburgh community and providing inner-city housing ministries.

Students will assist with general home repairs and focus on building relationships with homeowners.

Students participating in The Pittsburgh Project service trip include David Berg, a freshman from Lititz; Andrew Brunette, a freshman from Aliquippa; Melanie Byler, a from Salisbury; Melanie Ferguson, a junior from Cuba, Ohio; Daniel Garcia, a senior from South Gate, Calif.; Moesha Godwin, a freshman from the Bronx, N.Y.; Sydney Green, a freshman from Markleysburg; Amanda Groft, a freshman from Hanover; Mandy Hart, a freshman from Fort Loudon; Abigail Kingston, a freshman from Fombell; Kenneth Knouse, a freshman from Catawissa; John Lydic, a junior from Verona; Austin MacGregor, a freshman from Saxonburg; Nicholas Merrill, a freshman from Zelienople; Emily Nowakowski, a sophomore from Bridgeport, Ohio; Patrick O’Regan, a freshman from Hanover; Alexis Prettiman, a freshman from Jeannette; Torre Remish, a sophomore from Belle Vernon; Nicole Romero, a freshman from Cudahy, Calif.; and Victoria Tibbens, a freshman from Oakmont.

Twenty-three students will spend spring break in Concord, N.C., from March 7-14. Chad Sherman, assistant professor of communication, and Brandon Szuminsky, instructor of communication, will serve as trip leaders.

To address substandard housing issues in North Carolina, students will serve with the Lake Norman, N.C., Habitat for Humanity affiliate to assist in building homes for residents.

Students participating in the Habitat work camp mission trip include Nicole Aponick, a senior from Harrisburg; Victoria Berggren, a junior from Lower Burrell; Holly Berkey, a freshman from Friedens; Charles Cook, a junior from Cheswick; Heidi Evans, a sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska; Sara Faiad, a senior from South Fork; Mary Hoffman, a junior from Butler; Amanda Hooker, a junior from Bedford; Erin Kern, a senior from Friedens; Joseph Kondash, a senior from State College; Mary Krepp, a senior from Pittsburgh; James Law, a senior from Erie; Cody Lemke, a senior from Stow, Ohio; Philip Littlejohn, a senior from Union Springs, N.Y.; Kaitlyn Marteney, a senior from Berlin; Amber Martin, a sophomore from Book Park, Ohio; Steven McHenry, a senior from Knox; Anna Narehood, a freshman from Frenchville; James Sneed, a senior from Moseley,Va.; Kristen Sniezek, a junior from Moon Township; Travis Sumner, a sophomore from Eighty Four; Brianna Watt, a senior from Waynesburg; and Dylan Ziegler, a senior from Knox.

Twelve students will spend part of their spring break from March 7 to 14 working with Strong Missions in Carrillos, Costa Rica. Strong Missions is a Christian organization that specializes in serving and providing for the needs of low-income Costa Rican individuals. Christopher Kellner, resident director at Waynesburg University, and the Rev. Carolyn Poteet, director of international programs, will serve as trip leaders.

During the trip, students will assist with construction projects as well as participate in the Strong Missions Loaves and Fishes Feeding Program, aimed to provide feeding education and extracurricular programs to families.

Students participating in the trip include Devin Coughlin, a senior from Oxford, N.J.; Joshuah Dains, a senior from Clarksville; Emma Emiliani, a senior from Canton; Kara Evans, a freshman from Concord, Calif.; Cody Hillberry, a senior from Sycamore; Parker Kantos, a junior from Waupaca, Wis.; Jessica Marabello, a junior from Pittsburgh; Derrion May, a junior from Belleville, Ill.; Shelby O’Brien, a senior from Pittsburgh; DeRon Scott, a junior from San Diego, Calif.; Michael Stroud, a junior from Lockport, N.Y.; and Victoria Whitty, a junior from New Wilmington.
