Washington woman accused of stealing from 100-year-old

A Washington woman faces charges after she allegedly stole more than $50,000 from a 100-year-old East Washington woman for whom she was worked as a caregiver.

Candida Brown, 37, of 645 Hayes Ave., is accused of writing herself checks totalling $52,416 from the joint account held by the woman and her daughter-in-law over an almost 10-month period starting last April.

The woman’s son contacted East Washington police Jan. 30 after noticing there was a low balance in his mother’s checking account. He told police that early last year she had about $70,000 in her account.

Police said that Brown allegedly wrote herself checks from the checkbook. The signatures on checks did not match the woman’s signature. Brown, who was paid $672 a week as caregiver, would write herself additional checks in that amount, police added.

Brown told police that she needed the money because she is addicted to heroin and pills.

Brown is charged with theft, receiving stolen property and forgery. The charges were sent Monday from the office of District Judge Jay Weller. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 14 before Weller.
